Montreal

How Luc Paradis’s First Big Show Rocked the White Cube. Luc Paradis has been a well-known figure in the Montreal art scene for nearly a decade. He’s shown work widely in the city’s alternative art spaces, designed numerous concert posters, and produced album artwork for local bands like Thee Silver Mt. Zion, Pas Chic Chic and now-defunct Feu Thérèse (of which he was a member), as well as American acts like the Black Lips and Jacuzzi Boys. Despite all this, “POMPIA” was Paradis’s first major solo exhibition in a commercial gallery, and he was clearly determined to make the most of it. Canadian Art, June 11, 2013

Met Museum Returns Sculptures To Cambodia “The life-size sculptures, known as the “kneeling attendants”, had been displayed at New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art for nearly 20 years. Feds Seize Millions’ Worth Of Allegedly Smuggled Antiquities From Jailed Dealer “Federal agents have seized an estimated $100 million in art over the last two years from a prominent Manhattan antiquities dealer they describe as one of the most prolific antiquities smugglers in the world. Could this be a record $10-million painting? 1 The guide price for Jetty is £4-million to £6-million ($6.4-million to $9.5-million), but estimated values for an artist of Doig’s stature are pretty much meaningless. The hammer price of some of his paintings is sometimes several times the auctioneer’s estimate. In 2007, his White Canoe went for an astonishing £5.7-million – five times the predicted price – at a Sotheby’s sale. At the time, it was a record for a living European artist. Venice’s Encyclopedic Palace Sets Ambitious Curatorial Pace. “The Encyclopedic Palace,” is Massimiliano Gioni’s hallmark show for this year’s Venice Biennale . He has brought more than 150 artists to the Central Pavilion in the Giardini and to the Arsenale, the historic naval-yard site a 10-minute walk away. Together, the sites and the artists make for a remarkable exhibition that explores the boundaries of artmaking while fusing familiar names from the contemporary art scene with object-makers who come from far beyond its usual horizons. Dubai

Abbas Akhavan Wins Dubai’s Abraaj Group Art Priz. Today in Dubai, Toronto-based artist Abbas Akhavan was announced as one of five winners of the 2014 Abraaj Group Art Prize. The prize is awarded annually to five artists from the Middle East and North Africa on the basis of proposals for new artworks. Those artworks then become permanent additions to the Abraaj Group Art Collection following their unveiling at the subsequent edition of Art Dubai.
